There are three basic heating systems and three basic fuels in use on Long Island

  • Steam
  • Forced Hot Water
  • Forced Warm Air
  • Oil Heat
  • Natural or Propane Gas
  • Electricity

Forced Hot Water Heating System

A forced hot water heating system is one of the most popular heating systems on Long Island. It serves two purposes; to heat your home and it can also provide domestic hot water throughout your house. This system is called a hydronic system because they rely on water rather than air. This type of system may also be piped through the floors to heat your floors, creating a radiant heating system.

  1. More thermostat zones for more control
  2. Heating your home with water is more efficient than using air
  3. More comfortable heating as warm air rises.

Forced Warm Air Heating System

A forced warm air system uses a furnace with a burner and blower to heat the air and deliver it through a series of ducts to warm the building. One advantage of this type of system is the ability to add an evaporator coil and condensing unit and have a complete HVAC system for both heating and cooling.

Steam Heating System

A steam system is not much different from a hot water heating system except that the hot water is heated to 212 degrees at which point it vaporizes and turns to steam. The steam will then rise on its own without the help of a pump to fill your radiators to warm your home. Although a steam heating system is a good option, it is slightly less efficient than a forced hot water heating system where the water is only heated to 180 degrees.

Gas Heating System

A natural gas heating system is considered the more economical choice of the three basic fuels used for commercial and residential heating systems. This is based on monthly utility costs in the Long Island market. It is also considered one of the cleanest forms of heating for your home. Gas heating burns affordable, domestic natural gas to keep your home warm.

Check out our oil to gas conversion page for more information on converting your system to gas.

Oil Heating System

Oil burners employ the same type of heating systems as gas, it is just a matter of the type fuel used to produce the heated medium. An oil system can disperse the heat produced throughout your home either through hot air vents, or hot water and steam released through a radiator.

Electricity

Using electricity to power a heating system comes in the form of a heat pump, this system reverses the operation of an air conditioning system and moves heat from outside to the conditioned space with the help of refrigerant and a compressor. The Unitary type of heat pump also uses a resistance heater for those days where the temperatures drop well below freezing.
